January and Ellen Smith
January was born and raised in San Antonio, TX while Ellen was born and raised in Austin, TX. They both attended The University of Texas at Austin and studied Mechanical Engineering where they met in their thermodynamics class sophomore year. After January graduated with his BS, he moved to Virginia to begin his engineering career while Ellen stuck around for her MS and joined him a year and a half later. Their engineering careers would take them next to Tennessee and finally back home to San Antonio with projects that ranged from launch vehicles to sustainable power generation.
In 2022, January made a career change into personal financial planning. After passing the Certified Financial Planning Exam, he launched Janus Financial Planning, LLC as an independent Registered Investment Advisor. In 2026, four years into the creation of a successful business, Ellen joined JFP as an Investment Advisor Representative.
In addition to working on the family business, January and Ellen also work together on their life-long project of raising their son, January Smith V ("J"). J proudly marks the fifth generation January Haden Smith.
The Name "Janus"
The Name "Janus"
Our family name, January, is the first month of the Gregorian calendar. This month was named after Janus, the Roman God of transitions. Our financial lives are full of transitions: from changing careers, moving, getting married, having kids, retirement and beyond. This makes Janus an appropriate figure for a financial planning firm. Janus is often depicted with two heads: one looking backward to the past, with the second looking forward to the future.
Within the industry, tax accountants are often faulted for only looking at the past and losing sight of the long term goal. Meanwhile, planners and investment managers often fail to incorporate the past as they look to the future. Through Janus Financial Planning, we strive to have one eye on the past and the other on the future.

Janus Financial Planning was founded to bring comprehensive, personalized, and fee-only advice to individuals and families in a transparent way. As our family grew and financial security became increasingly more important, we began researching the financial services industry. We were astounded by the ambiguity around fee structures and the tendency to focus solely on investments, often times with prohibitive asset minimums. We have set out to fix this and earn your trust along the way. When you partner with Janus Financial Planning, you are partnering with us - your goals are our goals. We aim to work with a select few households so that we can work with you on a very personal level. We love personal finance and we hope that shows.
